MIFARE DESFire EV3: Next Leap In Contactless Technology
Near Field Communication has been as prominent as ever with the latest innovations in smart city and smart building applications. As such, NXP has been aggressive to innovate into proximity technology with the help of their MIFARE DESFire family of products. In June 2020, NXP announced a new addition in their range as MIFARE DESFire EV3, the fourth generation into MIFARE DESFire range.
MIFARE DESFire EV3 allows a whole array of services into smart city applications. This new chip came with optimised performance, even robust security and complete integration of proximity services. All these benefits while providing full backward compatibility with previous implementations. This new generation MIFARE DESFire EV3 is well suited to various applications such as smart buildings, access control, intelligent parking applications and other related intelligent city applications.
Advanced Security
MIFARE DESFire EV3 offers robust architecture for security and privacy. MIFARE DESFire EV3 is compliant with common area EAL 5+ certification. Also, the IC itself can support a set of cryptography algorithms based on DES, 2k3DES, 3k3DES, or AES.
MIFARE DESFire EV3 offers a card generated MAC in order to verify the transactions along with a transaction timer that would allow them against any attacks such as man-in-the-middle attacks. This system architecture would open an array of applications where similar robustness is needed.
MIFARE DESFire EV3 also offers a new generation Secure Unique NFC messaging that works as a measure for data security and integrity. This technology ensures complete authenticity to any card or mobile with the help of a unique authentication message and a secure URL that is verified with the server.
Mobile Ecosystem
MIFARE DESFire EV3 provides seamless integration with MIFARE 2GO cloud platform that manages the MIFARE product credentials and allows complete access to the NXP’s ecosystem. This feature would enable contactless transactions or similar access using wearables, smartphones and other mobile devices.
MIFARE DESFire EV3 also supports over-the-air firmware updates to already implemented smart NFC cards using smartphones. This OTA compatibility would offer updation and scalability to deploy new features and services for existing cards. Such scalability will provide a lot more value to the businesses and the brands that implement MIFARE DESFire EV3.
Communication Range & Transaction Speed
With MIFARE DESFire EV3, NXP has improved the operational range of the IC and offers a higher transmission speed compared to the previous range of products. It would allow the proximity services to improve the user experience as well as system usability.
Based on the advantages mentioned above, here are some of the applications where MIFARE DESFire EV3 would create an excellent value for the end consumer:
- Public transportation systems
- Closed-loop micropayment systems
- Identification for schools and work
- Access control mechanisms
- Customer loyalty schemes
NXP’s MIFARE DESFire EV3 card offers a large capacity, compatibility, robust security and high encryption that is needed for many smart city applications. It won’t take long for MIFARE DESFire EV3 cards to enter the market into public transport, contactless payments, membership cards and other similar areas. This IC reflects NXP’s efforts to improvise and secure the contactless applications for next-generation smart city applications. This new generation of cards can bring an excellent consumer experience and trust for the customers.
