Nike enters into the connected world by bringing limited-edition of sneakers integrated with NFC chips. Nike has released all-white Air Force 1 Low QS ‘NikeConnect NYC’ to feature NikeConnect app and Near Field Communication for the first time. Nike takes this initiative to build a strong relationship with customers by providing them access to discover stories behind their sneakers. The AF 1 permits the Nike+ app users to access ‘‘The Choice’’ features that bring a chance for a user to purchase one of the two limited-edition stock of shoes after every month.
Working of Nike’s NFC-enabled Sneakers
The working of Nike Sneakers follows the same pattern of NFC technology. After buying the AF 1 Low QS NikeConnect sneakers, you can see the NFC tag attached to the NikeConnect logo at the bottom of the sneaker’s heel. Now scan this NFC code through your smartphone’s NikeConnect application. Tap the screen sensor and gain access to exclusive content such as upcoming Nike events, conferences in New York City, along with the opportunity to buy a fresh piece of Nike kicks.
Sandra Carreon-Jon, Global corporate communications director at Nike, has notified that this limited-edition of NFC-enabled sneakers is basically the testing stage of NikeConnect, and it is only for NikePlus members, allowing them to experience more personalized services and experiences that are customized according to their favourite footwear and apparel.
Nike’s Anti-Theft Card
Nike has also designed a pair of sneakers containing anti-theft properties. Nike’s Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG ‘‘Court Purple’’ and Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG ‘‘Pine Green’’ contains anti-theft buckles, which are based on the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and RFID tags.
Nike uses RFID to embed the anti-theft security feature of RFID technology in their sneakers. The anti-theft security mechanism plays a paramount role to maintain the integrity and authenticity of footwears and to identify counterfeiters. To put it simply, Nike’s return and exchange policy can identify whether the returned sneakers are theirs or not.
Before the release of Nike’s anti-theft card, it was easy for counterfeiters to make clones or duplicates of their security cards and to return fake footwear. And now, the anti-theft card contains RFID chip, which can’t be duplicated, or at least it is less difficult for them to make the exact copy.
How RFID Tags Fight Against Counterfeiting?
The reasons that help the RFID tags to fight against counterfeiting are; each RFID chip has its own globally verified unique UID that can’t be cloned, and the chip has a memory to store all the traceable information, helping Nike’s officials to trace their original products. The RFID chip also contains an asymmetric encryption algorithm to obtain a ciphertext that is irreversible on its own, concluding that it can’t be cracked by cloners. All in all, these features of the anti-theft card enable Nike’s officials to quickly determine the authenticity of original products.
