Traditional lockers have served their purpose so far. They required users to carry keys and ensure they don’t lose them constantly. While this is cumbersome, thieves can anyway mimic some of those old locks. The more items to be locked, the more keys the user would have to carry with them all day long. RFID has a solution for this problem as well, and this article covers how RFID can change your existing lockers for advanced ones.
What is an RFID smart locker?
As the title would suggest, RFID smart lockers use electronics to lock or unlock instead of relying solely on mechanical locking systems like conventional lockers. RFID lockers would include a locking mechanism, power supply, and an RFID addition inside the locker to make it more secure against any manipulation. On top of these, RFID systems can work with any locker that might be made out of wood, metal, and other compounds made for lockers. In fact, these lockers are cost-effective and look even better with their designs.
Smart lockers: the working principle
RFID systems are always consisting of two modules, one is an RFID reader, and the other is an RFID tag. For smart lockers, the reader is placed inside of the locker, and the under is given with a unique RFID tag that can unlock a particular locker. Now, for smart lockers, An RFID tag can be a wearable band, a thin card, or a keyfob that the user can carry and use to unlock the locker through their unique identity.
RFID readers would always broadcast radio waves in nearby space to power the tag, and the tag, in turn, can send unique identification. The RFID reader in the locker would verify the presence of a unique tag. Whenever the user is nearby or taps around the locker, the reader would unlock the locker if the right tag is used. Otherwise, it won’t unlock in any other way or with any other incorrect RFID key.
Advantages of upgrading to smart RFID lockers
RFID lockers have a handful of benefits over conventional locking systems or other advanced locking systems that are currently deployed. Here are some of the substantial advantages of upgrading to smart RFID lockers:
- They are easy to install & easier to use:
RFID smart lockers are easy to install with little effort and do not require any engineering work or background. Plus, using them is a piece of cake as users can wear it as a wearable or can carry it like a card and can just tap to unlock.
- Robust security:
Conventional locks required keys, and often users would eventually lose those keys. To mitigate that, there is always a provision to have spare keys, which can also cause vulnerability and further security concerns to protect the original as well as spare. That’s not the case with using RFID cards to unlock the locker.
- No physical or environmental contact:
These RFID locks are confined inside the locker within an enclosure as such users do not have physical access to them, nor are they exposed to environmental factors such as water or sweat. These provisions ensure that the lock lasts longer and there is no way for malfunctioning.
It makes sense to upgrade your current lockers with RFID instead of waiting for any event to motivate the change. RFID can increase safety, make the vault easier to use, and the user can be free from the chain of losing & finding keys.
