Amazon Managed Blockchain: What is it?
Amazon Managed Blockchain, a fully managed solution that allows joining public networks, establishing and operating scalable private networks using popular open-source frameworks. The overhead involved in setting up a network or joining one already exists, Amazon Managed Blockchain automatically expands to meet the needs of hundreds of applications processing millions of transactions. Once the network is operational, Blockchain makes managing and maintaining the network simple. It keeps track of certificates and makes it simple to welcome new users to the network.
What is the purpose of Amazon Managed Blockchain?
User may simply join public networks or construct private networks across many AWS accounts using the open-source frameworks Hyperledger Fabric and Ethereum with Amazon Managed Blockchain. These blockchain technologies allow network users to exchange and share data securely on a decentralized and immutable ledger. It also allows establishment of voting rules for your network so that members can govern it democratically
Getting Access to Amazon Managed Blockchain
The open-source Hyperledger Fabric CLI and SDK can be used to communicate with the Hyperledger Fabric components that Amazon Managed Blockchain has created and is managing, including the ordering service, certificate authority, and peer nodes. To access these services, Amazon Managed Blockchain offers endpoints.
To connect to these endpoints on your network, you must construct a VPC PrivateLink endpoint. A version of the Hyperledger Fabric CLI and SDKis suggested compatible with the Hyperledger Fabric version specified in your network. To engage with Ethereum smart contracts, client connects to a Managed Blockchain peer node endpoint via a WebSocket or HTTP connection. Only AWS Account can access node endpoint.
Features:
Manageable
In a few clicks, you can set up a network.
With Amazon Managed Blockchain, getting started is simple. Without any additional configuration, you can build a blockchain network in a matter of minutes. Start your blockchain peer nodes and activate your network membership using the AWS Management Console. To develop a virtual network for testing, you can either create extra members in your AWS account or allow other AWS accounts to participate in your blockchain network.
Simplicity
Voting to add new members
When creating permissioned blockchain networks, it may be necessary to use bespoke programming and permissions management to allow existing members to vote on the inclusion (or removal) of new members. Amazon Managed Blockchain offers a voting API that enables participants in a blockchain network to swiftly vote on motions to add or remove new members in order to make this process simpler.
Fast Access
Within minutes, join a public network.
A public network is simple to join. Using the AWS Management Console, you can select the public network you want to join before provisioning a peer node. Secure networking, quick and dependable syncs to the blockchain network, dependable flexible storage for ledger data, encryption in transit and at rest, and safe access to open-source APIs are all features of Amazon Managed Blockchain.
Optional Frameworks
With Amazon Managed Blockchain, you may select between Hyperledger Fabric and Ethereum, two well-known blockchain frameworks, based on which one best suit the needs.
Hyperledger Fabric support
You can create blockchain applications using the open-source Hyperledger Fabric blockchain technology from the Linux Foundation, which also provides access control and authorization for anything on the blockchain. It makes it simple to build a private blockchain network and restricts which transactions each party may see.
Assistance for Ethereum
Ethereum is a decentralized, blockchain-based platform that creates a peer-to-peer network for safely running and validating application code, or “smart contracts,” on the internet. Participants can carry out verified transactions without the need for a reliable central authority thanks to smart contracts. The distribution of transaction records over the network is safe, immutable, and verifiable, allowing users’ complete ownership and access to this data. By using user-created Ethereum accounts, transactions are transmitted and received. In order to process transactions on the network, a user needs to confirm transactions and pay with Ether, Ethereum’s native coin.
Scalability
Simple to scale
You may quickly invite new entities to join your Amazon Managed Blockchain after you’ve established one. Each new recruit of your blockchain network accepts the invitation and creates a membership before configuring peer nodes that offer processing, space, and memory to run decentralized apps and keep a copy of the ledger. Additional peer nodes can speed up transaction processing if you really need to scale your application. Managed Blockchain offers APIs that enable you to swiftly add extra nodes to handle your application’s changing needs. Additionally, Managed Blockchain offers three instance families, bc.t3, bc.m5, and bc.c5, with different CPU and memory configurations, so you may select the right combination of resources to handle your workload.
Secure
AWS Key Management Service-backed
The certificate authority of Hyperledger Fabric, a part of the blockchain network that handles user identities and provides enrollment certificates, is secured by Amazon Managed Blockchain using AWS Key Management Service (KMS) technology. You won’t need to bother about configuring your own security apparatus, including hardware security module (HSM), using Managed Blockchain.
VPC endpoint interactions that are secure
Through Amazon VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) endpoints, you can safely communicate with your Hyperledger Fabric components that are under the control of Amazon Managed Blockchain. Through this endpoint, you can also endorse transactions while working safely alongside blockchain peer nodes from all other users of your network.
Reliability
Enhanced ordering experience with Amazon QLDB technology
The default ordering service for Hyperledger Fabric supports transactional network communication using Apache Kafka. Despite the fact that Kafka satisfies the need for a messaging platform that can transport transactions progressively across the network, it is not designed to maintain a full record of transactional data, challenging to retrieve historical transactions in the event of a failure. The ordering service for Amazon Managed Blockchain is created using Amazon QLDB technology, that has an unchangeable change log and keeps a complete history of all unsettled transactions in the blockchain system, making it more resilient.
Use Cases for Managed Blockchain
Trading and Transfer of Assets
Importers, exporters, banks, shipping firms, and customs departments must all collaborate in order for trade to take place. The creation of a blockchain network in which all participants may conduct business and handle trade-related documents electronically without the requirement for a central trusted authority is simple for financial and trading consortiums using Amazon Managed Blockchain. Transactions on a blockchain network created employing Managed Blockchain can execute instantly, unlike other methods that call for trade-related paperwork to be sent and received among the stakeholders requiring 5–10 days to complete.
Retail
Retailers frequently seek to enhance customer loyalty programs by collaborating with banks, other retailers, and outside organizations to provide a wider range of consumer rewards that may be redeemed across a wide network of partners. It can frequently take 5-7 days to conduct incentive transactions when a central agency acts as an intermediary. With Amazon Managed Blockchain, a group of merchants can quickly and easily set up a blockchain network that enables them to swiftly and transparently communicate and authenticate rewards information without the requirement for a central processing hub for rewards transactions between shops.
Supply Chain
Distributed supply chain networks, in which no single organization is in charge of the end-to-end movement of items throughout the network, are frequently used by small enterprises. For instance, to confirm the authenticity and worth of diamonds, jewelry businesses frequently need to track their provenance. These companies can swiftly introduce a blockchain into their supply chain network using Amazon Managed Blockchain, enhancing transparency and enabling real-time recording and tracking of commodities as they move from one party to another. Each distributor or supplier can join the blockchain network, manage their own distributed ledger, and track every piece of information pertaining to the movement of the commodities, including timestamps, ports of entry, and the quantity of items received, independently. Given that each member keeps a separate duplicate of the distributed ledger, all stakeholders may rely on one another to know where the items really came from and where they were handled.
