Manufacturers of Chinese smartphones have a long tradition of getting the best inventions from Apple and rendering them their own. So, to see a company like Huawei launch a credit card should not detract from the fact.
The Huawei Card was launched in April 2020 by the Huawei Consumer Business Group. And the company’s latest initiative borrows many of the best aspects from the Apple Card. It is both a digital and a physical card, for example. Moreover, in the same protected pocket that manages mobile payments, the company’s phones can store some information. The card is sponsored by UnionPay, China’s largest card payment company, which aids the NFC tap payment method for users.
In the intention of being a competitor to Apple Pay campaigns, there is no annual charge for the first year, and the company will cover the second-year fee for anyone who spends a certain sum on Huawei Pay. The card is issued with travel advantages as well. Users can get lounge access at train stations and airports after paying a certain amount of money. Huawei plans to provide exclusive in-app discounts, and cash rewards and discounts would be available for individuals who pay for transactions via Huawei Pay.
Benefits of NFC in smartphones
NFC helps you to easily exchange data between two devices by saving you a pairing challenge. What you need to do is basically putting NFC- enabled devices nearby like within 10-cm range and then transfer data or connect to a device. This is also the working mechanism for NFC enabled payments when you put your smartphone close to the payment terminal in the checkout of a supermarket or store.
In recent times, NFC has become more critical than any other software, especially when it comes to contactless payment. When you download the payment app on your smartphone, all you need to do is touch the phone on the credit card terminal and sync using NFC. Then, you may be prompted to check your finger or enter a code to facilitate the payment. The payment is then authorized with a separate chip called the SE (Secure Element) that passes the authorization back to the NFC modem. And from this moment on, the payment sets up similarly to the traditional exchange of credit cards.
At the same time, in line with the competition with Apply Pay, Huawei Pay is pretty active and aggressive in terms of expanding borders and trying to normalize the use of NFC payment through its Pay terminal, called Huawei pay, or Huawei Wallet.
Huawei Pay already serving in Malaysia
With an ICBC UnionPay credit card deposited in their digital wallet, Malaysian customers with eligible Huawei devices can now use Huawei Pay to make NFC contactless payments and banking. As of November 2020, with UnionPay International and ICBC bank, Huawei has introduced its mobile payment service in Malaysia, allowing consumers to make tap and go payments at checkpoints endorsing UnionPay QuickPass.
Huawei Pay Expanding to South Africa
Consumers with eligible smartphones in South Africa will now use Huawei Pay to render mobile payments through scanning QR codes integrated with the Zapper scan-to-pay payment network as of December 2020. In collaboration with Zapper, Huawei Pay was developed and utilizes the Huawei Wallet software to deposit funds.
