In the future, Ikea’s demo store still gives its total catalog for clients, but in a virtual setting. The Swedish furniture retailer create a digital experience in a physical world by using augmented reality. It achieves mainly by RFID technology.
Gonzalo Marcos, in Accenture team Hybrid Spaces, said: “It is about smaller stores where we need to create new experiences, which will help Ikea to show its total catalog in a narrow space. The store’s walls like screens, filled with product information. Due to RFID technology, the famous Ikea pencil also works as a scanner. You can add product to your shopping cart just by tapping a label of it.”
The magic pencil will also show different patterns or colours in some products, projecting them onto it. The store in the future will have RFID sensors hidden away in the shelves and those detect the pencil’s signals to make it work. In the future, the Ikea urban store will let clients check out with their pencils at a touch-screen cash register with unmanned operation. Client’s order will then be ready to pick-up or home delivery.
In fact, there are no plans to build a store like this: the presentation was only an example for the technology convention Mobile World Congress. Accenture hopes to show the possibility in retail, but it could be that Ikea and Accenture launch a kitchen demo in Seville soon, where the walls will have product information projected onto them.
